Ho Ho Ho...Christmas Party Aftermath...

IMAG0317
So, while all those who attended the Christmas party last night are creeping around their homes as quiet as mice (not having made it into the office as yet, if at all) - all those of us who didn't are here enjoying the *huge* free breakfast laid out (I'm guessing) *primarily* to soak up their (sadly absent) woes - a multitude of sticky cakes, croissants and pastries, a legion of bagels (largely salmon/egg/cream cheese related but some ham and cheese affairs) and a horde of *hot* muffins (sausage and egg, egg and mushroom or bacon and egg from the looks of things, but there were so many I gave up going through the piles)...yeah, I took a proper tummy-full...mountains left for the casualties (although they will probably all be congealed and cold by then - he says, licking the liquid egg yolk from his fingers)... ;)

Update - Can this be true?  A *mountain* of McDonalds has just arrived in the office also...I'm not going to need to eat for the rest of the year at this rate!!

Thomas has Two parties to celebrate being 2 years old!

So, with Thomas being 2 and us having lots of family and friends, we decided to have 2 parties on the same day... 3-5 for toddler friends... 6-8 for family and friends...

We had prepared lots of lovely toddler friendly food including Bagel snakes, egg toad stalls, cheesy feet and a few tasty treats that make it a party (including party rings and cheese balls!)

Thomas got his wish to eat cake (and not being used to cake, the sugar rush that followed afterwards!)

All the toddlers made hats with Lovely Louise, ate lots of food, smeared even more into the carpets and played happily in the garden in the Play house, sandpit and on the ride on toys... Thomas loved celebrating with his mates, couldn't quite take in that everyone was here together and when we all sang 'Happy Birthday' to him, he smiled as we all sang his name, then said 'No'. There were absolutely no tears/tantrums until it was hometime when the over excited little ones, just didn't want to leave! (and we fall onto the sofa for 10 mins happy that it was such a success!)

But, no rest for the hosts as a few of us tidied up, hoovered the crumbs, and got ready for party number 2.... where an excited Thomas was insistent on wearing his new PJ's from Brenda! We didn't take many pictures at this party, but celebrated with close friends and family who all enjoyed Chilli, Jacket potatoes and Birthday cake...

Thomas was literally asleep on his feet as we put him to bed at 9.30... and he collapsed into bed after a fantastic day knowing full well what a birthday entails ... he had happy dreams until gone 9 the following day and Fink and I were wide awake at 7 and actually went in to check him a few times as he has NEVER slept till 9! (and Sunday morning was present time as there were even more to unwrap!)

Thanks everyone for all your help, presents and making it such a special day ;o)

Thomas 2nd Birthday by Flyingpops

I absolutely love reading back through Fink's blog and often treat it as a diary, reminding me of birthdays, holidays and am very guilty of saying, "We must blog about that when we get home" (but never get around to doing so)! However, life has been fairly busy over the last month, and Fink hasn't had a chance to blog, so as a dutiful wife and having only ever posted a handful of times, I thought I would try and help record a few recent events...

So, rewind your Hermione Granger time travelling clock and meet me back on the 6th August...Thomas' 2nd Birthday!

Initially, Thomas didn't really understand what a birthday was...he was a little confused as his friend Hugh was 2 a week earlier and we had celebrated with cake and presents in the park. When asked if it was going to be his birthday, he always said 'Huga Mooga birthday' and 'cake', yet as the event approached and my excitement built he could definitely sense something was happening...At one point, he really thought inanimate objects like a cement mixer, tractor and recycling trucks had a birthday too (sweet!)...

So, I set about filling the house with homemade posters, banners, blew up balloons and wrapped all the presents. I'm really not sure who was more excited, but when Thomas went to bed on Friday evening, he definitely knew there would be a birthday, presents, cake and a party the following day!

When we all woke up on Saturday morning, there was a large stash of pressies waiting for our special boy...

As soon as he woke, I lept out of bed and we all raced downstairs excitedly... singing Happy Birthday and doing lots of cheering!
Thomas quickly learnt to open the big ones first, was taught to shake, smell touch and then tearing open paper (something I love to do myself!)

And loved trying out his new helmet and arm, elbow and knee pads for the scooter!
Then, with presents open it was time for Thomas to enjoy a special treat breakfast of Cheerios, watched Cars on DVD, then completely exhausted from the excitement, fell into bed at about 11 o'clock giving us plenty of time to start chopping, grating, chilling and preparing for 12 toddlers all due at 3pm..

Easy First Birthday Food

Here we go, the spread we did for Thomas' family birthday party-
Thomas' Birthday Party
- join me, if you wish, to go into more detail about some of the treats we made -
Sausage Aeroplanes
Sausage Aeroplanes - take Porky Whites Surrey sausages (the best British sausage) and fry them in a little oil at a medium temperature, turning occasionally for around fifteen minutes, allow them to cool, then slice in half (length ways) to form the body of the plane, next, take some cracker bread and, using an extremely sharp (non-bevelled) blade, slice them in half (also length ways) to form the wings, now slice a small triangle of cheddar to form the tail fin and open a packet of Hula Hoops, removing two that are reasonably circular...the last thing to do is to open the "glue", which is a tube of primula (or similar)...start with one piece of cracker bread and use two little blobs of primula to attach the Hula Hoop "wheels" then just lay the sausage onto it (this stops it falling over), squirt a spot of cheesy glue onto the top of the sausage and pop the top wing into place (hold it for a second) and then do the same with the tail, preferably serve right away, if not chill the planes to set the "glue" or a few bits may fall off...
Bagel Snakes
Bagel Snakes - Hard boil a dozen large eggs (start with a pan of cold water, add a little salt, pop in the eggs, then bring to the boil and cook for seven minutes), allow them to cool, remove the shells (roll them on a chopping board, bash the rounder end where the air pocket is, nip the membrane and then peel the shell off in one go working in a circular fashion), roughly chop them and add a small jar of mayonnaise (mayonnaise has a high PH and acts as a very good preservative, contrary to what you may have heard) and a good grind of cracked black pepper. Slice the bagels in half (into two rounds) and then chop these in half to make semi-circles, then arrange them into snake shapes, smearing them with a generous amount of egg mayonnaise, then decorate with chopped chives, olive or baby tomato eyes and thinly sliced red pepper tongues...
Egg Mushrooms - Cook up some *more* hard boiled eggs (same method as above) then when cool, carefully slice off the top and bottom, then half some large, ripe English tomatoes and balance them atop the eggs, using Primula to decorate them with spots, slice some cress to make "grass" to decorate the plate you present them on...
Cheese and Pineapple Monster
Cheese and Pineapple Monster - this one is really easy, everyone knows how to make cheese and pineapple on sticks (pro-tip though, get the cheese out and bring it up to room temperature first, especially if it is Cheddar, this reduces the crumble factor when inserting the cocktail stick), for the monster's body, just carve a mouth out with your sharp knife, then take a slice of Gouda or plastic American cheese, make a small slice and cut "teeth" from it and arrange in the mouth, tomato eyes can be attached with more cocktail sticks...
Thomas' Birthday Party
Sea Monster Rolls - Just normal submarine rolls, I happened to fill these with tomato, mozzarella, shredded basil, ham and a drizzle of olive oil, then I inserted bulbous eyes from mini cheese biscuits, and slicing a hole in the back and sides, cucumber fins...
Train Cake
Birthday Train - this was extremely simple, no cooking involved, just buy a couple of chocolate Swiss rolls, a load of sweets (for decorating) for glue use a mixture of icing sugar, cocoa powder and a little water, a bag of dessicated coconut, a little water and some green food colouring for the grass, Jammy Dodgers and Rollo's for wheels, Matchmakers for the rails and chocolate fingers for the sleepers! Then just go crazy, in a good creative way, only took us about 10 minutes and looked really good... ;)

Hope that has provided some inspiration! ;)

Bonfire Party

Getting the fires lit
So on Saturday night we headed over to Flyingpops folks to join in celebrating Bonfire night, to be enjoyed with an evening of watching all the neighbours firework displays (too many little ones to fancy risking actually setting any off in their garden), starting with the lighting of the Chimenia-
Fire well under way
- which, while just spewing out a load of smoke to start with, became a little like a blast furnace once it got going(!)
Bonfire Party
Once everyone had wrapped up warm enough to venture outside a colossal number of sparklers materialised -
Twin Sparklers
- making for some very interesting light painting camera opportunities, then we finished off proceedings with spicy chilli beef, tomato soup, sausages in rolls with onion and a very fine bonfire cake -
Bonfire Cake
- which was even marbled in the middle with red giving the impression of swirling flame!

Weekend update

Well, you couldn't exactly call the weekend just gone *relaxing*, but it was filled with fun, starting with getting up really early on Saturday to look after a little boy who wouldn't stop throwing up - five times in the space of an hour - four times into Flyingpops hair and once all down my front, but luckily I hadn't bothered to get dressed by that stage...we started the day proper with a trip to my folks (who had helped baby-sit on Friday night while Flyingpops was at a "book party" at her sisters house) for a hair cut and then a super-off-road dog walking session through some hugely overgrown paths out the back of Oxted (which the Bugaboo coped with incredibly well), then a quick stroll down the hill for an hour in the swimming pool, this time I went on the 70m water slide *and* had my first ever Sauna - incredibly, the temperature inside was roughly the same that I use to cook my roast chicken on a Sunday (I know because they have a thermostat on the wall), and there are scary signs warning you to remove all jewellery as the metal can get incredibly hot if you stay in too long...but you do actually get used to the heat extremely quickly and it does sort of become rather therapeutic, I swapped myself between there and the steam room (which feels like it's cleaning out your lungs, and probably is) and then (when you absolutely can't take it any more) you dive into the pool (which is 30 degrees, but feels like minus 50)! Thomas enjoyed being in his little inflatable again, especially when the wave machine kicked in (we missed that last week because we were only in the water for about 20 minutes... ;)

Anyway, later on in the day we went out for a lovely meal at the Box Hill Smith and Western, I couldn't make up my mind so I had the combo (where you get steak and chicken and ribs - just to make sure I didn't feel left out if anything tempting looking left the kitchen that I hadn't ordered), then we headed over to Box Hill village hall for Charlie's birthday party (which tried *very* hard to wake Thomas up with extremely loud music, but failed)...

Sunday morning Thomas decided we weren't having a lay-in, so we headed over to Tesco a bit early, discovering happily that they start serving breakfast long before the main store opens (so we totally skipped the normally enormous queue for the cooked breakfast - hehe)...anyway, we got half way round the store picking up our food for the week and then Thomas decided he didn't want to be shopping either, so we cut the visit short and ordered the rest on the Internet, I cooked us up an early roast (lamb) which we ate as we watched the F1 - Well done Jenson! - and then after X-Factor, it was baths and bed...and now I need another weekend (a quiet one this time), and so does Flyingpops (as I think she's coming down with a bug), but we won't get that for another working week...although at least Flyingpops can have a bit of a duvet day - don't think that would go down too well in the office... ;)

Christmas Party bookings in August

Christmas Party bookings in August!
No...it just *can't* be...spotted this the other day outside one of the hostelries of the Wharf, but honestly - in the middle of a summer heatwave, is *anyone* seriously thinking about booking up their office Christmas party??

Aftermath of the Office Christmas Party

Earlswood Station - Foggy Sunrise
Well, never seen a commute like it, there were *empty* *seats* on the Jubilee line... <:0

Got into the office at 08:45 to find it absolutely full of slightly malodorous colleagues who never actually managed to make it home from the office Christmas party(!) some of whom have managed something like one hours sleep under their desks (from the sounds of things)...I missed it as I was at Flyingpops' work having drinks by prior arrangement (but nothing like as colossal a "good time" as this lot seem to have had from the sounds/look/smell of things)...

If I had been left in any kind of doubt as to the nature of the event, it was immediately dismissed when I discovered this discarded wrapper for a "Novelty G String (with animal sound)" laying by my keyboard...
Novelty G string (with animal sound)
I'm almost relieved I missed it (although the photo oportunities would, no doubt, have been plentiful)! ;)

Janet's 50th Birthday Party #3
...meanwhile, I put together a large amount of food (two kinds of pasta salad, tomato mozzerella and basil salad, tomato and thinly sliced red onion salad (with balsamic dressing), 3 kinds of roast chicken (plain, hoi sin, and honey and sesame)...
Janet's 50th Birthday Party #4
...waldorf salad and roast vegetable cous cous) plus absolutely hundreds of kinds of crisps, nuts, olives and other snacks...more savoury food is coming along later from RANS, Sylvia, Janet and Paula, and a selection of home-made deserts has been promised from my mum...
Janet's 50th Birthday Party #5
...Jinx wrapped up the "pass the parcel", and RANS are bringing a few other games along too (including an intriguing-sounding "pea game")...even Colin the Camper is helping, by donating his fridge to keeping some of the beer cold ;) -
Janet's 50th Birthday Party #6
- and now I have to stop doing anything for a while...exhausted... ;)

Moo StickerBooks - and London Summer Party

Moo StickerBook button
So, tonight is the big launch party in Kings Cross for the new "Moo StickerBook" *thing*, I love Moo cards, so I'm guessing the stickers are going to be equally excellent (although quite what I am going to stick them on, at this stage, I cannot say)...what I can tell you is that you get 90 stickers for just under a fiver, which is just about the right price for a bit of fun with your photography...just need to take some nice, vibrant texture shots now, although the odd cropped sunset might do the trick too... ;)

Anyway, it's a free party, and Moo are paying the tab on the bar ("for a while anyway", thank you Moo-people)...Renemy went to the Moomeet in SF earlier in the year and said it was a great laugh, so, nothing to loose, might even get some free stuff (in exchange for my free promotion), you never know...! ;)

Oh, *and* we are being taken out for a free lunch by the office too (at Canal 125), so quite a good day today, all in all...! ;)

NPG Underground Christmas Party at Guanabara

...is tonight...Got my "welcome" pack...with a reminder of what food I had ordered ("Peru Assado", which is "baked turkey" (served the traditional South American way), and "Bolo de Chocolate" which is chocolate cake)...We get a glass of wine with dinner, plus vouchers good for 1 cocktail, 1 soft drink and either 5 more glasses of wine or beer...should be sufficient... ;)

Oh, and above, our little bit of the office, all properly decorated now... ;) Got Flyingpops' Z1 for pics tonight, so more tomorrow, assuming it goes a little better than last year (groan)!!

Update - Someone is selling their vouchers on eBay! :0

Halloween Party

Halloween Party #3
Went to a Halloween party last night (costume, of course), drank a lot, played silly games, made a terrible mess with party poppers, jolly good fun... ;)

Actual halloween isn't until Tuesday, but have stocked up on required sweets for the little darlings on the estate (millions of kit-kat bars, as they were on offer in Tesco)...plus we scored one of the numerous pumpkins, provided as decoration at the party, to put in our window so the kids know it's okay to knock (the one pictured above actually!)... ;)

Nic and Stuarts Birthday/Housewarming

Just a very quick update on Friday night, we had the very great pleasure of attending Nic's Birthday/Housewarming party, the place was absolutely packed with all the usual suspects (pics on Flickr for the family), and the usual mainstay cuisine of such events (the omnipresent "chilli", which I must remember to provide next time we are the hosts, will have to restrain my hand as I spice it up though, we can do without any further near fatalties ;)

They have a lovely new flat, complete with "Spa bath" (Ooo! The luxury! Next time you go off on hols I don't suppose it would be too tough to come and check on the place from time to time ;) -
Nic's Birthday #4
- and festivities ran into late into the night, including an absolutely incredible co-incidence, one of those "Well, isn't it a small world" things...nice to meet you again Mr Mainstone...goodness, we aren't *miles* away from being related...and *that* is a trip... ;)
Nic's Birthday #23
Anyway, once again, happy birthday Nic... ;)
