...arrived at the Grand a bit early (as I mentioned on Friday morning already)...

...checked in and had a spot of breakfast (caffeine/cakes), worked through the -extremely entertaining- conference stuff in the morning, had a quick break mid-morning for more tea (etc.) when I had a bit of a wander around for some fresh air (very hot in the conference hall with all the lights/projectors/people)...

...lunch was a hot buffet (best bit was the tiny roast beef and horseradish sandwiches imho, all the hot bits smelt a bit fishy) then hopped on a load of coaches to the Brighton Lagoon, right on the beach, separate from the sea but full of (very salty) sea water...

...my favourite activity was the laser sailing, couldn't wakeboard to save my life (just drank a load of seawater for 20 minutes)...yuk...
Chilli Pepper Pete's Brighton
...oh and then found Chilli Pepper Pete's shop in the Lanes on the way back to the station!  Will need to do a proper shopping trip there at some point!  Obviously the rest of the office stayed on to enjoy the free drinks and free hotel bed and breakfast (and free coaches back to London) in the morning...but we had a wedding to go to!  Office is slightly abuzz with the carnage/stories of regret that happened after I left (so quite pleased I went when I did!)... ;)

Oh and it was Chicken Chettinad today...

Chicken chettinad
...in the staff canteen (absolutely delicious spicy curry from Southern India) served with Saag aloo, steamed cardomom pilau rice, mango chutney and raitta...£3.57...going to need to top up my payment card again soon at this rate, lunch is normally a bit cheaper than that... ;)

Off to Brighton tomorrow for the company conference/awards ceremony (they have laid on a bunch of coaches to get everyone there) at the Grand Hotel (and then some water-based -out at sea- activities in the afternoon - hope my wetsuit still fits after all this fine grub!), plus they have paid for *everyone* to have a free hotel room for the night afterwards! Amazing!  What a pleasant way to segue into the weekend... :)

Online Marketing 07

The Angel, Islington
So yesterday took a trip up to Angel to visit the NMA sponsored Online Marketing 07 conference, got a little bit lost trying to actually find the place, happening first upon the tradesmens entrance in Liverpool Road, and being directed to walk around the block (back the way I had come) by a burley security guard when I tried to follow a lorry driver in through the loading bay -
Business Design Centre, tradesmens entrance
- so, I finally managed to locate the *proper* way in -
Business Design Centre, Main Entrance
- where there was a queue of about 20 people waiting to pick up their badges (which I joined the back of), the person who was two in front of me hadn't registered, so was sent, blushing, to go and fill out his demographics by the front door and then (like a naughty school boy) join the back of the queue, next the person in front of me (who smiled smugly and presented her filled out demographic form) was then left stuttering when it was announced that the "on the door" registrants had to pay TWENTY QUID ADMISSION! "But why is it so much?" she asked, to be told "Admin costs", "But it's free to register online!" she protested (to a shrug and a "sorry"), at which she acidly flicked over her credit card...(personally I would have gone and found a cyber cafe or walked up to the library and registered rather than cough up, but she probably just expensed it)... ;) Anyway, being a good boy, and having pre-registered, I handed over my e-ticket, collected my complimentary "Doubleclick" neck strap, attached my newly printed name badge to it, and headed towards the doors...being handed a complimentary bag of popcorn (courtesy of "Big Mouth Media") as I did so... ;)

Muching handfulls, I wandering the stalls, spotting (and politely endured sales pitches from) content management providers, SEO/Search specialists, end to end agencies, SEO/Search specialists, design studios, SEO/Search specialists, email and banner serving providers, SEO/Search specialists, the odd new media association (trying to invent themselves), SEO/Search specialists and yet more SEO/Search specialists (who by then I was hurrying past with my NMA carrier bag in front of my head) -
Online Marketing 07
- went to a number of the (generally very interesting) workshops, the best of which (about current general marketing strategy and trends) was largely ruined by the young lad who was *supposed* to be doing the AV for the PA system, but seemed much more interested in sneaking bits of his Burger King lunch from the drawer beneath the controls) -
Online Marketing 07
- tut...anyway, had a really good day, will certainly attend again, as it's facinating to see things from the "other side" (i.e. what the marketeers are being advised to do, going forward), oh and I also got a load of pens, and (a *real* coup) a doubleclick T-Shirt (when I volunteered us to be on the public beta for their widget dashboard) (don't ask)... ;)

Doubleclick Customer Forum - Millennium Hotel

So, week just gone, I felt just about well enough to head into London (spurred on by the fact that I really didn't want to miss this forum, as they are always extremely valuable), so it was just my luck, that we had not only *another* bus strike, but the tube was in absolute chaos (three lines suspended) too!

It was only at the Millennium Hotel in Grovesnor Square, so under normal circumstances I probably would have just walked, but thanks to the problems with my leg, my only real option left was to get a cab. When I hobbled off the slippery Victoria station concourse and out to the taxi rank, my heart sank when I saw that rather a lot of other people had been thinking along similar lines, in fact, the end of the queue was out of sight somewhere down Wilton road, the cabs weren't coming quickly either, in the 90 seconds I spent pondering my next move only one cab came onto the rank.

This was never going to work, I had to get away from the chaos of Victoria and try to hail one elsewhere...So, to the buses, unfortunately the three different TFL HVJ wearers attempting to direct the desperate angry mob all gave me a different answer as to which bus to catch to get me nearby, so in the end I just got on the 73 because I knew it went past Green Park tube, which isn't a million miles away from Grovesnor Square...the bus was packed, I didn't get a seat, I was in pain with my leg, and when I finally managed to get off again I realised I had come too far, being miles up Oxford Street. A great silver lining though, my plan had worked, no more than 2 minutes of hobbling and a cab went past with his light on, hehe...a further 2 minutes and £4.40 later the cab door was being opened by a top hatted doorman, my rucksack and stick were lifted from my hands and I was helped to my feet to a gruff but friendly East end "'ello Sir, alright then?"...

I got to my seat (in the end)...(aaaaaand relax!) phew...won't bore you with the details of the forum, but it was excellent, some really exciting stuff coming up (and I got a free pen)... ;)

At lunchtime we were released, oddly I seemed to manage to be one of the first people to get organised and follow the instructions for how to get to lunch with one other fellow, we "Just cross over by reception, it's the door right opposite"'d and were stunned to see this wonderful sign by the doorway, could it really be true? Doubleclick feeding us in the Brian Turner Mayfair? I checked the one other door in the area and it turned out to be the "Brian Turner Bar", which would have been equally good... ;)
Millennium Hotel - Brian Turner Mayfair
But the total confusion on the face of the Maitre'D lead us rather rapidly to the conclusion that it was not to be... :( One of the Doubleclick folk came and scooped us up, kicking and screaming and dragged us into a little meeting room by the back door, where they were serving up a crazy concoction of chewy boeuf bourguignon, cold pilau rice with red onion and some sort of Petit Pois spicy Dhal...a quite extraordinary combination...
Our *actual* lunch... :(
As if to rub our noses in it, my companion even pointed over my shoulder and said "there he is", I turned to look behind me and there he was indeed...Mr Turner, in his whites, walking past the door, so he was even personally cooking in his kitchen...bah... ;(
